Demaray Funeral Service began as a dream for Dowell and Judy Demaray during the late 1970’s. Dowell had worked for over 15 years as a funeral director in the Treasure Valley and had wanted to own and operate his own funeral home business.
In 1980 their dream came true. The Thompson-Sears Funeral Chapel located in Gooding, Idaho and the Leeper Mortuary located in Wendell, Idaho came up for sale. As these were the only two funeral homes serving all of Gooding County and Camas County, (Gooding, Wendell, Hagerman, Bliss and Fairfield), Dowell and Judy thought this was the perfect opportunity.
During the summer of 1980, Dowell along with his two oldest children, Dwain and Debra, moved to Gooding. Dwain had graduated from Capital High School in Boise in 1980 and Debra was a junior in high school. Dwain began working for Demaray Funeral Service as an apprentice. A short time later Judy moved to Gooding with their two youngest children, Darrin and Angela. Over the next several years Dowell, Judy and Dwain operated the business.
In 1988 Dwain obtained his funeral director’s license from Mount Hood Community College and returned to Gooding. Dowell and Dwain both obtained their insurance licenses and provide funeral - burial insurance through Great Western Insurance.
In September 1992 Dowell and Judy purchased the Bergin Funeral Chapel in Shoshone, Idaho. The Bergin Funeral Chapel served all of Lincoln County (Shoshone, Richfield and Dietrich). With the addition of the funeral chapel in Shoshone, Demaray Funeral Service now covered all of Gooding County, Lincoln County and Camas County.
In 2000 the Demaray family invested in a crematory. Demaray Funeral Service and Crematory has provided cremation arrangements for local families as well as area funeral homes. Providing on site cremation arrangements and personalized services Demaray Funeral Service continues to serve the north side of the Magic Valley.
