If you are a United States veteran or ex-service person who served on active duty, your survivors may be eligible for a wide range of benefits, including burial costs. Your state’s regional office will have free pamphlets available and a staff of people to answer your questions. They can advise you about documents you need in order to apply. An American flag is available to drape the casket of a veteran. After the funeral service, the flag may be given to the next of kin or a close associate of the deceased. The VA provides inscribed headstones and markers for the graves of veterans anywhere in the world. Bronze niche markers are available to mark columbaria in VA national cemeteries used for the inurnment of cremated remains. Grave sites in national cemeteries cannot be reserved; however, funeral directors or those making burial arrangements can apply at the time of death.
