Social Security Benefits

The federal and state governments have programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid to which we all contribute while working. Being informed about what we have earned and making sure we receive these important benefits is part of being prepared.

To assist with your planning, contact your nearest Social Security office or call (800) 772-1213. You can order publications dealing with specific areas of interest, such as survivors benefits or disability payments. Social Security benefits are subject to change every year so keeping up on the changes is important.

To file a claim, notify the local office immediately by phone or call (800) 772-1213. They will need to know the date of death and deceased’s person’s Social Security number. They may also request that you provide additional documents as needed.

Veteran's Benefits

If you are a United States veteran or ex-service person who served on active duty, your survivors may be eligible for a wide range of benefits, including burial costs. Your state’s regional office will have free pamphlets available and a staff of people to answer your questions. They can advise you about documents you need in order to apply. An American flag is available to drape the casket of a veteran. After the funeral service, the flag may be given to the next of kin or a close associate of the deceased. The VA provides inscribed headstones and markers for the graves of veterans anywhere in the world. Bronze niche markers are available to mark columbaria in VA national cemeteries used for the inurnment of cremated remains. Grave sites in national cemeteries cannot be reserved; however, funeral directors or those making burial arrangements can apply at the time of death.

Will

A will is a legal expression or declaration of a person's mind or wishes as to the disposition of his property, to be performed and to take effect after his death. It is not a sheet of paper nor a number of sheets of paper but the written words thereon. It must be executed with the formalities required by statute only after the death of the maker.

Living Will

A living will is a relatively new legal document which has been made necessary by the advent of recent technological advances in the field of medicine which can allow for the continued existence of a person on advanced "life support" systems long after any normal semblance of "life," as many people consider it, has ceased.
